1. Find out who will be your child's teacher(s).
2. If possible, locate a picture of the teacher to show to your child before the child enters the school.. if at all possible do it now.
3. Associate your child's "new" teacher with something your child likes (e.g., Ms. ? has Lego's in her room... Ms. ? has books on weather...etc. --- of course, make sure the teacher actually has the item of interest).
4. If possible, meet the teacher before the "meet the teacher night" (this can be via a phone call or email).
5. Make a decision to work with the teacher... it benefits your child.
6. Find out the classroom & school rules. Practice these with your child before he enters the school.
7. Recognize and praise your child for behaviors that will benefit him/her at school (e.g., waiting in line, sitting on chair, asking for a break, using an alternative communication system, etc.).
8. Begin using a daily schedule and/or calendar. See examples below...

This is a schedule a mom & dad set up for their son in his bedroom (age 4 years old). They placed velcro on the calendar and have 6 squares or places to attach the pictures each day (counting the black frame). The day is reviewed and set for each day. Their son wanted to use the picture of a sink full of water for a swimming pool - and then wanted people on the picture too - very clever! :) Also note that the schedule looks pleasant... it is not overwhelming, busy, or indicative of work, work, work. Also, a special choice time is also on the schedule. This particular mom & dad have some great pictures to help other parents. If you are interested I'll attach a ppt.

This is a calendar one mom set up for her son. This calendar is in the hallway next to the living room. It is right there... can't be missed. Great idea!

This is a calendar used in a classroom, but it can give you an idea what to do for a calendar at home. You can also add your child's interest as part of the calendar. Picture is courtesy of K. Rowe
